Cloud Computing : Easy Adoption

In my last blog I had listed Cloud Computing, what and why? you can read it here.

Today I will elaborate on Ease of Adoption of Cloud Computing.

You will be surprized that how you are using cloud computing for more than a decade as an individual or consumer.

You all must have used an email id on Yahoo,Hotmail,Gmail or Rediffmail etc., that is nothing but a small section of cloud computing. All you needed is a browser and internet connection on your PC. Of course that was a consumer service so there was no service guarantee or support involved but you could still send and receive mails. You also can not use your own domain (abc@xyz.com), you have to use  def@gmail.com etc.

So why Cloud computing is in circulation now when it is available for so long?

As I mentioned earlier these were free services and no support and SLA (Service Level Agreement) was available. Also there were not many applications available.Today cloud service providers like Amazon,Google,Microsoft,IBM have thousands of servers installed across continents in their data centre.Today these data centres are one most secured places on earth, so your data security is assured. All paid Cloud service providers give you 99.9% uptime guarantee in money back terms. They provide more than mail services, they provide collaboration suites, they provide document managment, they provide CRM and ERP applications. They allow you to deploy your own application on cloud.Today options are unlimited.

To adopt to cloud computing requires only a computing device with internet connection and a browser. You do not need to maintain servers or high end computers to run mail servers or application servers. You can subscribe to service and get productive very fast.

Small and Medium Businesses can now very easily access ERP,CRM and Document management applications through cloud which was prohibitively costly earlier.

Cloud Computing – What & Why?

As per NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) definition of Cloud Computing is :

Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.(http://csrc.nist.gov/groups/SNS/cloud-computing/ )

In theory the process is very simple. Cloud computing could allow you to have only a small and inexpensive computer, processor and monitor in front of you. You would have no need for a hard drive or a CD/DVD drive. Instead you would need only an Internet connection, which would hook you up to a central supercomputer that would host all your programs and files.

Benefits of Cloud Computing :

1. Ease of Adoption ;

Both small and medium sized businesses can instantly obtain the benefits of the enormous infrastructure without having to implement and administer it directly.

2. Eco Friendly

it is more environmentally friendly. Reducing the number of hardware components and replacing them with cloud computing systems reduces energy costs for running hardware and cooling as well as reducing carbon dioxide emissions and conserving energy. Moving applications to the cloud can potentially reduce energy costs for running and cooling hardware. This can also work in combination with government tax incentives to go green and power companies added incentives.

3.  Reduced Cost
Cloud technology is paid incrementally, saving organizations money.

4.  Increased Storage
Organizations can store more data than on private computer systems.

5. Highly Automated
No longer do IT personnel need to worry about keeping software up to date.

6. Flexibility
Cloud computing offers much more flexibility than past computing methods.

7. More Mobility
Employees can access information wherever they are, rather than having to remain at their desks.

8. Allows IT to Shift Focus
No longer having to worry about constant server updates and other computing issues, government organizations will be free to concentrate on innovation.

Cloud Computing can be seen as the logical evolution in outsourcing IT services. The promise is that with cloud computing every company (Big or small) can get IT services in a very simple way

Way Forward :

Cloud Computing can be seen as the logical evolution in outsourcing IT services. The promise is that with cloud computing every company (Big or small) can get IT services in a very simple way.

The cloud computing paradigm is not the future. The technology is already available for a number of years. The future is about developing models that use the technological advantages that cloud computing enables.

Introduction

I am in computer technology  field for last 20 (well..almost) years. What I have and learned and believed is that technology can serve two purposes,

1. A tool when used effectively can help you achieve your goals efficiently. In this case you don’t need to love technology. If you are proficient in what you do use technology.

2. If you love technology, You can not only do things as mentioned in point 1, you actually feel happy and contented about it. As Mr.Arthur C Clarke said ‘Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic’.

My blog is a point to prove how both the points can be achieved.

Hope to hear you from all.
